I don't have full notes from class today but just for records sake, here's the mind map     Also, I was looking at the flowers from Disney's Alice in Wonderland and I like how they use the petals of the flower to form a face.     I've done an experiment where I use the flower's face directly to create a human face.      I'm not done yet, I want to do another face and I need to annotate the camomile one, but I'm happy with how my digital painting skills have come along. I'm kinda surprised that I'm doing reasonably okay at this kind of rendering.

First drawings

So I started drawing stuff. I figured that I should start with characters and then build everything else around them. So first, before I read the book on floriography, I did a basic rose person study: I wanted to draw a basic cute figure with the petals coming out of the neck area to resemble a rose. Also, this was good painting practice for me, it's a lot more painterly than I do usually. I want to get better at more life-like style rendering this year. I downloaded some brushes to play with and I really like using the blender to get the shape of the petals. After I finished the floriography book, I decided that even though I didn't know exactly what kind of society structure I wanted to do, I was pretty sure I wanted some kind of royalty. So, I did some quick concepts of a queen character based on the amaryllis flower:  I tried to play with the ratio of creature to humanoid. I think I want her to be closer to human but I'm not certain. Each of them feel like a different

Cicely Mary Barker

I started researching for anthropomorphic flowers and I came across the illustrations of Cicely Mary Barker. I'm sure I've seen her work before but I've never really looked into it.     On the official website  for her series the Flower Faires it says: Flower Fairies™ are tiny creatures (the biggest is only 20cm tall) that live in the tree tops, marshes, forest floor, wayside and gardens. Wherever and whenever a seed sprouts, a Flower Fairy baby is born. Each Flower Fairy lives and sleeps in their chosen flower, plant or tree, and as this grows the fairy grows too. Each and every Flower Fairy is in charge of looking after their flower or plant; keeping it strong and healthy by making sure it has plenty of sunshine and water to drink, sweeping away dead leaves, and polishing flowers and stems.      And in her work: The Wood-Sorrel Fairy The Scilla Fairy The Mountain Ash Fairy The Foxglove Fairy     I love how she uses the shape of the flowers to design her characters an

Flower Language

So during the summer, I kept busy doing illustration and one of the last ones I did was Kingdom Hearts fanart of two characters with flowers in the background.       For it, I did a bunch of research into flower meanings since I wanted the flowers to be indicative of the relationship the two characters have in canon. I specifically went for flowers typically used in funerals and chose flower colours based on direct meanings. Like roses are used a lot in funerals but the colour changes the type of mourning. And flower meanings will be different depending on time period and culture, like Victorian flower meanings are different to modern Britain ones.     So taking all of that, I was thinking that maybe if I could build a fictional society based on flower meanings. Like I could design anthropomorphic flowers and their role in the society is determined by the language of the flower that they are.
