First drawings

 So I started drawing stuff. I figured that I should start with characters and then build everything else around them. So first, before I read the book on floriography, I did a basic rose person study:


I wanted to draw a basic cute figure with the petals coming out of the neck area to resemble a rose. Also, this was good painting practice for me, it's a lot more painterly than I do usually. I want to get better at more life-like style rendering this year. I downloaded some brushes to play with and I really like using the blender to get the shape of the petals.
After I finished the floriography book, I decided that even though I didn't know exactly what kind of society structure I wanted to do, I was pretty sure I wanted some kind of royalty. So, I did some quick concepts of a queen character based on the amaryllis flower: 


I tried to play with the ratio of creature to humanoid. I think I want her to be closer to human but I'm not certain. Each of them feel like a different type of queen character. One feels kind, graceful and experienced. Two and three feel like princesses newly crowned. Two is more lively and three is dainty. Four feels powerful and harsh. And five is elf-like and maybe more rebellious than the rest. At the moment, two is the only design I dislike. The rest, I think I could develop into something depending on the type of queen character I want to go for.

I have completed illustrations for sunflower, hyacinth and lotus. 23/02/21 update

 I have finished two further illustrations: hibiscus and violet. The hibiscus illustration wa primarily insipred my Kali, a goddess in Hinduism. From what I read about her, she is portrayed as a being of chaos. However, in othe instances she is a divine mother who blesses people with one hand and deals punishment with the other. I found the contrast to be interesting so I made my character fairly masculine in a very feminine environment.     I've had some technical issues in the past week. My tablet pen broke so I needed to get a new one. Also, I was struggling a bit with what I should do next but I got an idea once my new pen came in.     Basically, what I've done is drawn a couple of my flower characters in poses with a particular emotion expressed. I then used gradient maps to change the colour palette to see how colour effects how the emotion is read. Pose 1: Clover and chamomile (Happiness/Joy) Pose 2: Asphodel (Sadness/Remorse)       My main take away from this experiment is that colour does little to effect the emotion of the image in of itself. Firstly, there's things like saturation and brightness. For example, red is typically associated with intense emotions but I can adjust how intense it feels though saturation levels. Also, I need to take into account context of the image. Colours are strongly symbolic of certain emotions but what symbolism you want is largely based on context. Like green is c
