Flower Language

     So during the summer, I kept busy doing illustration and one of the last ones I did was Kingdom Hearts fanart of two characters with flowers in the background. 

    For it, I did a bunch of research into flower meanings since I wanted the flowers to be indicative of the relationship the two characters have in canon. I specifically went for flowers typically used in funerals and chose flower colours based on direct meanings. Like roses are used a lot in funerals but the colour changes the type of mourning. And flower meanings will be different depending on time period and culture, like Victorian flower meanings are different to modern Britain ones.

    So taking all of that, I was thinking that maybe if I could build a fictional society based on flower meanings. Like I could design anthropomorphic flowers and their role in the society is determined by the language of the flower that they are.

I have completed illustrations for sunflower, hyacinth and lotus. 23/02/21 update

 I have finished two further illustrations: hibiscus and violet. The hibiscus illustration wa primarily insipred my Kali, a goddess in Hinduism. From what I read about her, she is portrayed as a being of chaos. However, in othe instances she is a divine mother who blesses people with one hand and deals punishment with the other. I found the contrast to be interesting so I made my character fairly masculine in a very feminine environment. Initial sketches My first idea was to have her in a gym First drawing of the composition I went with The phone charms were repurposed for her earings in the final Final draft Finished piece She is among nature since it felt wrong to keep her inside. 25/10/20 update

    I've had some technical issues in the past week. My tablet pen broke so I needed to get a new one. Also, I was struggling a bit with what I should do next but I got an idea once my new pen came in.     Basically, what I've done is drawn a couple of my flower characters in poses with a particular emotion expressed. I then used gradient maps to change the colour palette to see how colour effects how the emotion is read. Pose 1: Clover and chamomile (Happiness/Joy) Pose 2: Asphodel (Sadness/Remorse)       My main take away from this experiment is that colour does little to effect the emotion of the image in of itself. Firstly, there's things like saturation and brightness. For example, red is typically associated with intense emotions but I can adjust how intense it feels though saturation levels. Also, I need to take into account context of the image. Colours are strongly symbolic of certain emotions but what symbolism you want is largely based on context. Like green is c
